Artyce Mae Smith1

F, #11651, b. 9 December 1926, d. 23 June 2003
Artyce Mae Smith was born on 9 December 1926 at Mauston, Juneau Co., WI; Artyce was born in the upstairs flat over her Grandmother Coleman's grocery store. The store was across the street from the Mauston courthouse. Artyce was born about 11 AM in the afternoon around 4 or 5 PM Alice (mother) noticed that Artyce had stopped breathing. Grandmother Coleman had left Alice instructions for her to rap on the floor if she needed anything. Alice rapped on the floor and Grandmother Coleman rushed upstairs, saw that Artyce was not breathing, grabbed her up and took her out to the back porch where the temperature was 0 degrees, the sudden temperature change made baby Artyce gasp for breath and begin breathing, saving her life.1,2 She was the daughter of Arthur Reuben Smith and Alice Mae Coleman.1 Artyce Mae Smith died on 23 June 2003 at Longview, WA, at age 76; SSDI lists last residence as Vancouver, Clark Co., WA.1,2 She was buried in September 2004 at Oakwood Cemetery, Mauston, Juneau Co., WI; Artyce had requested to be cremated and her ashes spread on the graves of her father and sister. David Adler made a trip to Wisconsin to spread her ashes as she wished.1

Mary Frances Shute1

F, #11652, b. 27 March 1843, d. 26 March 1935
Mary Frances Shute was born on 27 March 1843 at OH.1 She was the daughter of Elbridge Gerry Shute and Sarah Clickner.2 Mary Frances Shute married Luther Cory Smith, son of Reuben Smith and Emily Glidden, on 24 February 1863 at Mauston, Juneau Co., WI.3,1 Mary Frances Shute died on 26 March 1935 at Mauston, Juneau Co., WI, at age 91.1 She was buried on 28 March 1935 at Rose Cemetery, Mauston, Juneau Co., WI.1
Mary Frances Shute was also known as Mary Frances Schuett.1 From a Mauston newspaper obituary: Mrs. Luther C. Smith passed away at the home of her son, George E. Smith, in the town of Lemonweir, Tuesday morning, March 26, 1935. When called from this earth by her Heavenly Father she lacked but one day of observing her 92nd birthday. Mary Frances Schuett was born in Ohio on March 27, 1843, and came to Wisconsin with her parents, the late Elbridge and Sarah Schuett. They made the journey by ox team, settling in the town of Lemonweir. Most of her life was spent near Mauston in that township, with the exception of a few years spent with her granddaughter, Esther Smith at Columbus. She was the last member of the Schuett family. At an early age she was united in marriage in this city to Luther C. Smith, who preceded her in death Nov. 22, 1912. To this union nine children were born, six boys and three girls. George E. Smith of Lemonweir, Charles L. Smith of St. Paul, Mrs. Harry (Emma) Clawson of Groton, So. Dak., and John C. of Minneapolis are left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted mother. Reuben, Allan, Frank, Nora and Lizzie preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith enjoyed remarkable health and was ill but a day before her death. She was one of the few remaining pioneer settlers of this county. At an early age she joined the Methodist church and until the last few years took a keen interest in their activities. She was a woman who enjoyed the friendship and respect of al who knew her, and her many deeds of kindness and charity will long be remembered. Funeral services were held from the Buglass school house last Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Alfred B. Nimz, officiating. Burial was in the Rose cemetery in Lemonweir. The pall bearers were six of her grandsons, Roy, Claude, Jesse, Clarence and Frank Smith and Henry Koblitz. Those from away who attended the funeral were Frank Koblitz, Esther Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koblitz of Columbus.2
