     Rev. George Sumner Ball was born on 22 May 1822 at Leominster, Worcester Co., MA.2 He was the son of Micah Ross Ball and Rachel Lincoln.1 Rev. George Sumner Ball married Hannah Barnard Nourse, daughter of Caleb Nourse and Orissa Holman, on 18 June 1848 at Bolton, Worcester Co., MA.3 Rev. George Sumner Ball died on 6 September 1902 at Upton, Worcester Co., MA, at age 80.4
     He was a minister and held pastorates at Bolton, Upton, Plymouth, and again in Upton, where he lived many years.5 He was a chaplain (of the 21st Regiment) in the Civil War and served nearly thirteen months, during which time he had been in the battles at Roanoke, Newbern, Camden, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg.6
     The George S. Ball School in Upton village is a one-story, Colonial Revival, stucco structure built about 1930.7
