Samuel Ball1

M, #30240, b. before 1756, d. 8 April 1806
Samuel Ball was born before 1756; based on him being over 45 in the 1800 census.2 He married Phebe Urann on 9 October 1793 at Sullivan, Hancock Co., ME.2 Samuel Ball married Sally Young, daughter of Stephen Young, circa November 1804 at Ellsworth, Hancock Co., ME.1 Samuel Ball and Sally Young posted marriage intentions on 29 October 1804.2 Samuel Ball died on 8 April 1806; drowned in Frenchman's Bay between Sullivan and Trenton ME.3
A letter exists written by a great-granddaughter of Samuel that says he was born in Northborough MA, but there is no obvious link to a Ball family there. Comment by DGB: If born in MA, one possibility would be the Samuel Ball born 1742, son of Peter Ball and Abigail Dix of Worcester MA. Another possibility would be the Samuel Ball born 1752 at Framingham MA, son of Jacob Ball and Deborah Belknap. Nothing beyond birth records is known for either of these Samuel Balls. That said, the death record for daughter Phebe lists Samuel's birth as having been at Sullivan, Hancock Co., ME. End of comment.2 He was in Capt. Daniel Sullivan's militia during the Revolutionary War. He marched to Machias, ME three times during 1777.2 From an obituary in the Portland ME "The Gazette": Drowned - In crossing the Bay, from Sullivan to Trenton, Mr. Samuel Ball, Deputy Collector of the Port of Frenchman's Bay which was occasioned by a sudden flaw [sic] of wind upsetting the canoe.4
