Gilmore 22 years of age was reported missing in action on August 13, 1944, after fifty-seven missions over enemy territory as pilot of a P-51 Mustang fighter plane. "Further information has been received indicating that your son, First Lieut. Gilmore was the pilot of a P-51 Mustang on a dive-bombing mission over Rouen, France on August 13, 1944. At approximately 1:15 o'clock p.m. that day near Gisors, France, your son's plane ran into the enemy's anti-aircraft fire was struck and crashed to earth. Crew members of accompanying fighters were unable to learn the losses on Gilmore's plane."3
