     From "The Salt Lake Tribune" 24 March 1932: "Man Killed, Wife Hurt in S.L. Shooting" The tangled skeins of a secret romance, revealed by a private detective, were being unraveled Wednesday night in the slaying at 9:45 a.m. of James Lawrence Beveridge, 37-year-old mechanic for the Royal laundry. His wife, Mrs. Margaret Smith Beveridge, was shot in the stomach, but physicians at the Holy Cross hospital say she will recover. Clarence J. Elder, 36, manager of the Elder Brothers Electric company, is in the city jail, charged with the slaying. He admitted to Chief of Police W. L. Payne that he shot the Beveridges in their home at 1061 Kensington Avenue, directly across the street from his own residence, 1063 Kensington Avenue.
     Mrs. Myrle Elder, wife of the prisoner, had just tossed a small diamond ring at Beveridge as he lay in bed in his home. She and her husband had gone to the Beveridge home in an attempt to clarify the marital tangle, she told police. As the ring, memento of the romance, fell upon the bed, Elder fired four shots. Three entered Beveridge's body, and the other struck Mrs. Beveridge in the stomach. "I saw black," declared the suspect. "I just pulled the trigger and let it go. I don't know anything about it."
     Comment by DGB: Initially Mr. Elder was formally charged with the first degree murder of James Beveridge, but that charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter, defined as an unlowful killing while acting in the heat of passion.
