Rev. Dyer Ball
b. 1796 West Boylston MA
d. 1866 Canton, China
Rev. Dyer Ball was born on 3 June 1796 at West Boylston, Worcester Co., MA.1,2 He married Lucy Hendricks Mills, daughter of Frederick Mills and Susan G. (????), on 3 October 1827 at New Haven, New Haven Co., CT.3 Rev. Dyer Ball married Isabella Robertson on 26 February 1846 at Canton, China.4 Rev. Dyer Ball died on 27 March 1866 at Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, at age 69.2 He was buried at Mission Cemetery, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.2
Comment by DGB: Note that the place of birth comes from his burial data; there was no birth record found in the MA vital records for him. A candidate for parents for Rev. Dyer Ball might be Jonah and Betsey Ball who were the parents of Rev. Mason Ball. Jonah Ball lived in Shutesbury MA where Rev. Dyer Ball moved about 1802. The Rev. Mason Ball lived awhile at Princeton MA very near to where Rev. Dyer Ball was born. The only known child to Jonah and Betsey Ball was also a minister and likely had siblings. End of comment. Dyer Ball studied at Phillips Academy and at Yale College for two years. He graduated from Union College, New York, in 1826 and then studied Theology at Yale and Andover Theological Seminary. He received his licence to preach in 1828. He was ordained in 1831, became an agent of the American Home Missionary Society in 1833, and settled in Florida where he taught, among other places, at St. Augustine school, Fla., and among the local African-American community. Meanwhile, as his appointment to a mission abroad was delayed due to financial circumstances, he also received a medical degree from a medical institution in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1837, and learned Chinese. He was sent to Singapore by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions on 25 May 1838, and remained there until 1841, when he departed for Macao due to his wife's ailing health. He then moved to Hong Kong in 1843, where his wife died, and to Canton, China, in 1845, where he settled permanently. He remarried in 1846, his new wife, Isabella Robertson, being a missionary from Scotland. His work focused mainly on performing missionary work and preaching. He ran a boys' school and opened a publishing house, where he published Chinese literature, religious tracts and a popular Chinese almanac. He also used his medical experience to help the local population.1      Portrait by Erastus Salisbury Field and part of the Morgan Wesson Memorial Collection at the Michele & Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts at Springfield, Massachusetts.
