During his whole life, he was addressed by his middle name, Metford, as one would use any middle name as Christian name much in vogue at that time. This had a profound influence on his identity as a member of the Metford family. In 1893, he changed his name to William Metford Metford at City Court, Brooklyn, New York, at the request of his uncle, William Ellis Metford.1 From an obituary: W. Metford Metford, for the last eight years an active worker and Bible teacher at the Welcome Mission, King Street west, died yesterday at his home, 56 Quebec avenue. Born in Somerset, England, 66 years ago, Mr. Metford had lived retired in Toronto since 1904. Besides his connection with the Welcome Mission, he was a member of St. John's Road Anglican Church. Mr. Metford is survived by his wife and three children: Ellis, a university student at Philadelphia; Helen and Miriam, of Toronto.1
