Robert Lewis Brandon was born on 29 July 1946 at Matador, Motley Co., TX.1 He was the son of R. L. Brandon and Lillie Anese Seal.1 Robert Lewis Brandon died on 9 December 2009 at Denver, CO, at age 63.1
From an obituary: Robert L. Brandon died in New York December 10, 2009. Robert was born in Matador, July 29, 1946, the son of R.L. and Lillie Brandon and the brother to Beverly Brandon. He graduated from Matador High School before going on to West Texas State University. He recently returned to Matador during school reunions and was working on plans for a documentary about historical buildings including the old jailhouse in Matador where his grandfather had once been the jailer. He became involved in Television News broadcasts in Amarillo while at WTS and during his career, he developed into a nationally known photographer. Robert was a two-time national Emmy Award-winning television photographer who also twice won the National Press Photographers Association's Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year title.
Brandon first won the Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year title while working as a chief photographer at KPRC-TV in Houston in 1975. He won the second time as a network freelancer in 1980. While freelancing, he worked for every major television network. He was one of the pioneer photojournalists at "48 Hours" for CBS News and set the style for modern documentaries. An NPPA member, Brandon was the author of The Complete Digital Video Guide, published by Readers Digest in 2005, and he also produced a series of video programs called "Shoot Like A Pro" to teach beginning photographers how to tell stories with video. In 2006, Brandon received NPPA's highest honor, the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, during NPPA's 60th Anniversary Photojournalism Summit in Tampa Bay, FL. Brandon had also been the winner of NPPA's Cliff Edom Award for his ability to inspire and motivate young photographers.
Robert is survived by three children -daughter Kristi Ortiz is a physician's assistant in Houston; son, Ron Brandon, lives in Oxford, NY, daughter Ellie Brandon lives in New York; sister Beverly Brandon Sweeney, brother-in-law John Sweeney, nieces Chandler Sweeney, and Kara Noah, and nephew Sean Sweeney all of the Ft. Worth, Texas area.1
