     Comment by DGB: After his service in the Civil War with different service units in PA and TN, he assumed the name of "John D. West". When he applied for a Civil War pension as John West, he listed his birthplace as PA (not the England he claimed on the 1900 census) and his sisters as Liz Lacey and Cordelia Smith, which confirms his original identity.
