Nicholas G. Ball was born on 31 December 1828 at Block Island, Washington Co., RI.2 He was the son of Edmund Ball and Charity Dodge.1 Nicholas G. Ball married Eliza Millikin, daughter of Abraham Millikin and Sybil Littlefield, on 17 August 1851 at Cranston, Providence Co., RI.3 Nicholas G. Ball married Almedia Rosalind Dodge, daughter of Solomon Dodge and Catharine A. Willis, on 5 April 1871 at Newport, Newport Co., RI.3 Nicholas G. Ball died on 31 July 1896 at RI at age 67.4 He was buried at Old Cemetery, Block Island, Washington Co., RI.4
At fourteen (about 1843) Nicholas Ball went to sea in a subordinate capacity.3 He was a Representative in the General Assembly in 1854 and 1855. at Block Island, Washington Co., RI.3 He was State Senator most of the time from 1858 to 1872. His efforts toward procuring for Block Island its breakwater, life-saving station, signal-station, and submarine cable, are matters well known.3 "He lost his mother when he was but an infant, but desires to pay this tribute to his step-mother: that she was a kind, and affectionate woman, beloved and respected by all, and that she could not have administered to the wants of the children better if she had indeed been their own mother."3 He again visited California as a member of the Society of California Pioneers of New England, in which society he was a director. in April 1890.3 He compiled and published "Edward Ball and Some of His Descendants". in 1891 at Block Island, Washington Co., RI.5 :TAB:Engraving from his book "The Pioneers of '49; A History of the Excurion of the Society of California Pioneers of New England from Boston to the Leading Cities of the Golden State with Reminiscences and Descriptions by Nicholas Ball" dated 1891.
