M, #15470, b. 30 March 1908, d. 23 August 1931
Ross Milton Goodman was born on 30 March 1908 at Toronto, York Region, ON, Canada.1 He was the son of Charles Ellsworth Goodman and Margaret Ann Ball.1 Ross Milton Goodman was baptized on 5 July 1908 at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Toronto, York Region, ON, Canada.1 He died on 23 August 1931 at St. Catharines, ON, Canada, at age 23; (Special Dispatches to the Globe and Mail): "St Catharines. Aug 23. - One man lost his life and two other young people narrowly escaped death in a motor accident on the Niagara Stone Road, between St Catharines and Niagara-on-the Lake, Saturday evening. Ross Goodman of 421 Palmerston Boulevard, Toronto, who ran into a 20-foot-2-inch hollow section of pipe-railing from a culvert, died in the General Hospital this morning. Goodman and his two friends John French, 922 Bathurst Street, and Miss M. Cornell of 100 Withrow Avenue Toronto, had been at the Niagara-on-the-Lake golf links and were returning home in Goodman's open runabout. All three were in the front seat. Tracks on the road show, the police say, that the car careened sharply and struck the metal railing of the culvert a glancing blow. This evidently knocked the coupling loose, throwing the released end against the radiator. The rail shot through the dashboard, through the body of the driver, Goodman, through the back of the seat, and brought up on the edge of the rumble seat. The car ran into a large willow tree, twenty feet from the other end of the culvert, and throwing out French and Miss Cornell, who escaped with a few bruises, it turned over into the ditch. Farmers and others who were attracted first saw the long metal bar protruding from the car, but were unaware of the nature of the accident. The bar was removed and the injured man helped out. He was able to say a few words. He was rushed to the hospital by Dr. Burnfield of Niagara-on-the Lake. Later a long nail was found in the right rear tire, which had released the air and was primarily the cause of the accident. The case was taken in charge by County Traffic Officer Claude Tufford, but the city and Provincial Police also assisted. Today Coroner D.V. Curry visited the scene and made a full investigation. It is not likely that an inquest will be held."1 He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, York Region, ON, Canada.2
