Charles Ellsworth Goodman1
M, #15376, b. 23 October 1863, d. 27 December 1916
Charles Ellsworth Goodman was born on 23 October 1863 at Oshawa, ON, Canada; It is family tradition that his middle name was a tribute to a family friend, Colonel Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth of Mechanicville NY, who on 24 May 1861 was the first Union solider killed in the American Civil War.1,2,3 He was the son of Robert Milton Goodman and Elizabeth Ann Doyle.1 Charles Ellsworth Goodman married Margaret Ann Ball, daughter of Charles Ball and Margaret Anne Murphy, on 23 December 1891 at Toronto, York Region, ON, Canada; by G. Taylor, Church of England, and witnessed by Edward J. Ball and Emma F. Humphrey.1 Charles Ellsworth Goodman died on 27 December 1916 at Toronto, York Region, ON, Canada, at age 53.3
Comment by DGB: There was a Goodman baby born and died 1 Jan 1905 (the birth record shows a son of an Aaron Goodman, but no parents are listed on the death record for a female that lived less than 1 day) that is attributed in some trees as belonging to Charles and Margaret. End of comment. From the Toronto Illustrated News: GOODMAN & CO. - A popular men's furnishing goods house in this city is that of Goodman & Co. at 302 ½ Yonge Street. This business was established in 1887 and, under the able direction and management of Mr. C. E. Goodman, a large first class patronage has been secured. Two floors each 20 x 60 feet in area are occupied and in the salesroom a fine display is made of everything in the line of men's furnishings, comprising elegant neck wear in all fashionable styles, white and colored shirts, underwear in silk, wool, etc., hosiery, gloves, etc. Fine shirts are made to order and satisfaction guaranteed as to fit, quality of material and workmanship. The house is one of the leaders of fashion in men's furnishings and always the first to introduce the latest London styles. Mr. Goodman was born in Canada and has resided in Toronto since 1888.3
He was a 33 degree Mason and belonged to Zetland Lodge No 326, Toronto. He was initiated 22 Jan 1897, age 33 years, passed 26 Mar 1897, raised 14 May 1897, and commuted life member 29 Jun 1904. His Scottish Rite ring, inscribed " Charles Goodman, June 1st 1900, Virtus junxitmors non separatit", passed to his daughter Margaret, then to his grandson Charles Ellsworth Goodman II, and as of 2006 was in the possession of his great-grandson Charles Ellsworth Goodman III.3
