     [From the Paine Family records Vol 2 (#1-11) p. 196]: Philip Paine, yeoman of Portsmouth bought land in NewCastle in 1713. Of his ancestry nothing certain has been ascertained. His wife, Christine, was the daughter of Peter Ball of Portsmouth. He removed to Rye and in 1738, Apr 11th, he gave a deed 'to his son John and in consideration that said John do pay to his brother, William, £50 and the same amount to his brother Amos, 15 acres of land in Rye.' He died in or before 1746 in which year his son John presented his inventory of £142 2s 3d.²
