     Lewis L. Ball enlisted a Private in NY during April 1861 and served during the Civil War until June 1865.⁸ From a newspaper report of 4 November 1892: "Bosard & Van Wormer, of Grand Forks, have begun a big suit in the district court to recover damages for personal injuries. The plaintiff in the suit is Louis L. Ball (sic), of Reynolds, and the defendant is the Minneapolic & Northern Elevator company. In September Warren Ball, son of the plaintiff, a lad 16 years of age, was killed while in the employ of the defendant. He was climbing a ladder in the elevator at Reynolds and in some manner fell to the bottom of the bin, a distance of thirty feet, and when he was found he was in a dying condition. The suit was brought for $10,000. The plaintiff claims that the company was negligent in not providing a safe ladder for the workmen. The case promises to be hard fought."⁹
