     Davis W. Ball was born on 19 April 1825 at Butler Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Stephen Ball and Susan Berry.¹ Davis W. Ball married Catherine D. Clark, daughter of Stephen Clark and Betsy (????), on 4 April 1850 at Cass Co., MI.² Davis W. Ball married Mary Evelyn Earle, daughter of Henry Earle and Lovina H. Weede, on 22 November 1860 at Decatur, Van Buren Co., MI.² Davis W. Ball died on 14 July 1916 at Hamilton, Allegan Co., MI, at age 91.¹ He was buried at Crane Cemetery, Volinia, Cass Co., MI.²
     He enlisted in the Mexican War and went to Vera Cruz under General Winfield Scott between 1847 and 1848.² From an obituary in the "Dowagiac Daily News": Davis Ball passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Dine in Hamilton Township yesterday afternoon at about three o'clock, aged past 92 years and by his passing one of the few surviving heroes of the Mexican War has gone to his reward. Davis Ball was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephan Ball, pioneer settlers in Volinia Township [an error; it was Wayne Township], their farm being located in the northwest corner of the township and until a few years ago still remaining in the possession of the son, Davis. When a boy Davis went back to his old home in Ohio and there at the age of 20 years he enlisted as a private to serve in the war with Mexico. He followed the fortunes of his regiment through all the stirring and dangerous battles of that period, marching with his regiment to the walls of Mexico City and staying all through the war until the Mexican general, Santa Ana, capitulated and acknowledged defeat. Those were times of peril to the soldiers of the United States, and times of hardship as well. They were in a strange country, cut off completely from help if overwhelmed by numbers, and poorly provisioned. Santa Ana was an inveterate foe of the Americans, and his orders were to spare the lives of none. Mr Ball's life after his return from the war was a quiet one, he seldom alluded to his services as a soldier. He was a good citizen and a good man. He was a good husband and a good father, and his declining years were passed free from care, thanks to the affection of his children. His funeral will be held at Wayne Chapel Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, with burial in the Crane Cemetery.²      Photo courtesy of Catherine Tiller.³

     Mercy L. (????) was born in March 1823 at OH.¹ She married Hilburn Joseph Allee circa 1843.¹ Mercy L. (????) died on 13 May 1848 at Cassopolis, Cass Co., MI, at age 25.¹

     Angeline Stright married Manning Allee, son of Hilburn Joseph Allee and Mercy L. (????), on 20 September 1866 at Harrison Co., IA.¹

     Alma Ball was born on 7 September 1881 at Wayne, Cass Co., MI.¹ She was the daughter of Davis W. Ball and Mary Evelyn Earle.¹ Alma Ball married Claude Gray, son of Enoch Gray and Almelia Kinney, on 8 October 1905.² Alma Ball died on 4 August 1971 at age 89.¹

     Laura Allee was born circa 1846 at MI.² She was the daughter of Hilburn Joseph Allee and Mercy L. (????)¹ Laura Allee married Lemuel Kingsbury on 22 November 1865 at Harrison Co., IA.¹

     Elizabeth Sheline was born in March 1881 at MI.² She was the daughter of John Sheline and Margaret Rapp.³ Elizabeth Sheline married Earl E. Ball, son of Orlando Ball and Sarah Melissa Lillie.¹ Elizabeth Sheline and Earl E. Ball were divorced.³ Elizabeth Sheline died in 1957.³
     Her married name was Ball. Her married name was Sibley.

     Edith Alice Ball was born on 10 September 1915 at Maple Grove, Berry Co., MI.¹ She was the daughter of George D. Ball and Ferne Lorraine Harding.²
     As of 19 April 1933,her married name was Dunkelberger.

     Eugene Harvey Ball was born on 28 February 1918 at Wayne, Cass Co., MI.¹ He was the son of George D. Ball and Ferne Lorraine Harding.²

     Keith Howard Ball was born on 8 April 1921 at Wayne, Cass Co., MI.¹ He was the son of George D. Ball and Ferne Lorraine Harding.² Keith Howard Ball died on 9 November 1971 at age 50.²
