Melancthon Smith Wickware1
M, #44783, b. 30 June 1813, d. 18 May 1875
Melancthon Smith Wickware was born on 30 June 1813 at Chazy, Clinton Co., NY.1 He was the son of Chapel Wickware and Anna Lamb.1 Melancthon Smith Wickware married Sarah Emma Harrison, daughter of Flavel R. Harrison and Eunice Linford, on 13 February 1840 at Dutch Reformed Church, Acquackanonk, NJ.1 Melancthon Smith Wickware died on 18 May 1875 at Jersey City, Hudson Co., NJ, at age 61.1 He was buried at First Reformed Church of Passaic Cemetery, Passaic, NJ; in 1921 the cemetery was closed and all bodies were removed to nearby cemeteries.1
In 1843, the New Jersey governor appointed Melancthon as a Passaic County judge of the Common Plea and a Passaic justice of the peace. Melancthon moved to Jersey City in 1853 and was Superintendent of the Jersey City Gas Works, which began supplying gas lighting for Jersey City in 1852. In spring 1856, Melancthon lost an election to the Jersey City Common Council/board of alderman. In the following autumn, he declined the Democratic Party's nomination to run for state assembly, reportedly as part of a political deal. He was elected to the Common Council in spring 1857. From 1857 to 1859, Melancthon was a Jersey City alderman, representing the 4th Ward and serving as Common Council president in 1857-58. Achieving office on a Democratic ticket, Melancthon was elected board president by his peers unanimously. The following year, after new elections replaced ten of the 16-member board, however, Melancthon lost the president's election on the 59th ballot. He declined to run again. From 1859-69, he served on the Jersey City board of education.1 From an obituary from the "New York Times": May 18, 1875
Melancthon S. Wickware, an aged and well-known resident of Jersey City, died yesterday morning at the County Almshouse on Snake Hill, where he was employed as a teacher for the pauper children. Mr. Wickware was a very wealthy and prosperous man a few years ago but reverses overtook him, and he was almost destitute when he died. He was engaged in the provision business in West Street, New York for a number of years and held the positions of Alderman and Member of the Board of Education in Jersey City for several years. He was sixty years of age.1 From an obituary in the Jersey City "Argus": 18 May 1875 Melancthon S. Wickware, formerly a wealthy property owner of this city, died this morning of ald [sic] age and general debility at the Almshouse at Snake Hill, where he taught the children. He was somewhat over sixty years of age. About ten years ago he was an Alderman of this city, and was for a long time a member of the Board of Education, of which Board he was also at one time clerk. He used to carry on a wholesale provision business in New York, and was at one time a man of considerable property. Late reverses, however, swept his fortune away and left him in penury. About two months ago he accepted a position as schoolmaster at the Almshouse, and held it until his death, discharging the duties of his trying position with a kindness that made him beloved among the little ones whom he taught. He was a life long Democrat, and warmly defended it, ever, against all calumnies leveled against it. Melancthon was buried at the First Reformed Church of Passaic Cemetery.1
