William Morris Davis1
M, #74783, b. circa 1850, d. 5 February 1934
William Morris Davis was born circa 1850 at Philadelphia, PA.1 He was the son of Edward Davis and Maria Mott.1 William Morris Davis married Ellen Bliss Warner, daughter of Benjamin F. Warner and Charlotte Smith Edwards.1 William Morris Davis died on 5 February 1934 at Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., CA.1
Graduating from Harvard University in 1869, William Morris Davis served as professor there from 1878 until 1912. Beginning about 1924 he lectured at universities in California, Oregon, Arizona, Illinois, and Texas, having previously lectured in Paris and in Germany. He was greatly interested in teaching methods and devices; a set of illustrative models which he designed, depicting natural features ranging from volcanoes to glaciated peaks, were widely used in the schools of this country. He was particularly active in organizing scientific bodies, and in 1912 he led the Transcontinental Excursion of the American Geographical Society, in which many scholars from this country and abroad participated. During the last few years of his life Professor Davis was instrumental in organizing two out-door scientific clubs in Southern California, the Rift Club, and the Southern California Inter-Collegiate Excursions. He was a frequent contributor to various scientific journals, and the author of several books on physiography. A particularly interesting compilation of his was a book called 'Geography of Northern France,' which was published by interested friends for the use of our soldiers in that locality during the first World War. There was no profit made from the book as it was given gratuitously to the soldiers. From the beginning of his professional career until the end, the lectures of Professor Davis invariably pleased and instructed his hearers. Referring to an illustrated lecture on the Grand Canyon delivered in many parts of the country, the same person who was quoted above stated that this lecture 'became virtually a classic and was enjoyed by thousands of persons.1'
