She joined the Women's Army Corps where she advanced to the rank of Sargeant and served in Eisenhower's Occupational Army in Germany.1 As of 16 May 1948,her married name was Varney. From an obituary: LUBEC - Frances E. Varney, 90, died May 11, 2006, at a Machias hospital. She was born April 25, 1916, in her beloved Jonesport, the daughter of Geroge M. and Ada L. (Knight) Foss. She was an active member of the Union Church in Jonesboro, singing in the choir, and was also active in the Grange and 4-H club in her youth. She graduated from Jonesboro High School and went on to graduate from the Washington State Normal School in Machias in 1938 with her beloved sister Anna. Her first teaching position was in North Brewer, then she went on to Ballad Hill School in Lincoln. Frances then joined the W.A.C.'s where she advanced to the rank of Sargeant and served in Eisenhower's Occupational Army in Germany. While there she attended school in Manchester, England. She also traveled extensively through Europe. Upon her return to Maine she continued her education by taking classes at the University of Maine. She then left her studies to return home to care for her grandmother Knight. There she renewed her friendship with Kenneth Varney. They were married in the Jonesboro Church. After their marriage they moved to Lubec where they both taught in the junior high school. They both became active in the Lubec Congregational Church. Frances sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Lubec. Where she made many long term friends. She is survived by three beloved sons, Jeffrey, Steven and Robert 'Bobby,' all of Lubec; two grandsons, Larry and Brandon; three great-grandchildren, Cyrstal, Tyler, and Mallory; her beloved sister, Anna Foss Wareing of Old Town; sister-in-law, Marie Foss; and niece, Penny, both of Machias; niece, Jane Wareing Flahive of Windham; two beloved cousins, Helene Wright and Leon Trenholm; and special friends, Kay Parker, Norma Hampton and Merrill 'Kingfish' Tucker. Graveside memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Lubec.2
