May (????), on 2 April 1941 at Amarillo, Potter Co., TX.2 Gordon Velcie Anderton died on 8 February 1997 at Pierre, Hughes Co., SD, at age 87.2 He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Pierre, Hughes Co., SD.2
From an obituary: G.V., 87, of Pierre, died Saturday, February 8, 1997, at Missouri Valley Nursing Center, Pierre. Survivors include his wife Freda; daughter Jobyna (Ray) Shields of Pierre; son Jackie (Pauline) Gibbons of Jeanerette, Louisiana; five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; two foster daughters, he and Freda raised, and their families, Sylvia "Sandy" DeGormo of Cedarville, California, and Beverly Wilson in Oklahoma; four brothers and five sisters. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.2 From a memorial service: Gordon Velcie Anderton was born June 2, 1909 near Gray, Oklahoma, second of twelve children to Robert and Grace Anderton. He grew up in the Gray, Oklahoma, Perryton, Texas areas working on ranches. As a young man he worked on the Santa Marguerita Cattle Ranch in California then returned to Texas. "G.V.", as his friends called him, specialized in breaking and training horses. In 1941 he married Freda Jack Gibbons in Amarillo, Texas. After ranching in Clap Hand, New Mexico, and Broadus, Montana, they moved to the Pierre area in 1955, settling near Canning, SD. In addition to training horses he also had a truck for hauling livestock. G.V. worked on the Oahe Dam Project as a driver. In 1966 G.V. was hired to train a 20 mule team hitch. After breaking, G.V. and the team made a trip from Death Valley, California to the Black Hills of South Dakota. G.V. remained active with livestock, working cattle in his 83rd year. For 22 years he was an active member at First Assembly of God Church, serving as a Board Member during construction of their new church.2
