From an obituary in the "Chicago Tribune": Services for Mrs. Kathleen Burke Smith, 68, of 550 Surf St., who was featured in many movies in the 1930s, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at 1458 W. Belmont Av. She died Wednesday in Columbus Hospital. Mrs. Smith won a nationwide contest in which 50,000 contestants took part in a Hollywood search for a young beauty to play the role of The Panther Woman in H. G. Wells' "The Island of Lost Souls," with Richard Arlen and Charles Laughton. At that time she was a 19-year-old parttime model and copywriter for a Chicago advertising agency. Born in Hammond, she moved to Chicago with her mother as a child and later attended Waller High School. She appeared in 30 film, including "Lives of a Bengal Lancer", "The Last Outpost," "and "Murders in the Zoo." She returned to Chicago in 1965.
