From an obituary in the "North Kingstown Standard Times": Gladys Mildred Ball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester W. Ball, of Main street, was killed Saturday morning in the water directly in back of the house where she had been playing with her brothers and sisters. The little one, nearly two years old, evidently had fallen off the stone wall and struck her head on a rock in about six inches of water. Her father was working in the yard and the other children had evidently left her alone. When she was missed, a search was made, both on the shore and on the streets near her house. The glare of the sun on the water prevented anyone seeing the body floating for awhile and it was not for about 30 minutes that she was discovered floating a short way from shore by Edward Greene. She was taken to Dr. Manning's office, where an attempt was made by the doctor, assisted by the Stae an unknown place police, to revive her by the use of a pulmotor. It is said that practically no water was found in the child's lungs, and since there was a bruise on the head, it is thought that she was killed by the fall and not drowned. After an hour's futile effort the doctor, who is also the Medical Examiner, gave permission for burial.1
