Carleton Roy Ball was born on 12 June 1873 at Little Rock, Lyon Co., IA.3 He was the son of Leroy Augustus Ball and Mary Adell Mansfield.1 Carleton Roy Ball married Bertha Floretta Steward, daughter of Thomas Corwin Steward and Lydia Cordelia Palmer, on 14 June 1904.3 Carleton Roy Ball died on 2 February 1958 at Washington, DC, at age 84.3
He graduated with a master's degree from Iowa State College. He was employed by the US Department of Agriculture as an agronomist in charge of cereal crops between 1899 and 1930. From 1930 to 1934 he was a Professor at the University of California. Between 1934 and 1943 he was a senior researcher for the Department of Agriculture in Washington DC and a co-ordinator between the Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
