Daniel Ball
M, #874, b. circa 14 December 1791, d. 28 April 1860
Daniel Ball was born circa 14 December 1791 at VT.1,2 He was the son of Nathan Ball and Betsy Ball. Daniel Ball was baptized on 9 December 1798 at Heath, Franklin Co., MA; "Bawl."3 He married Diantha Clara Clark.4 Daniel Ball died on 28 April 1860 at Brookfield, Eaton Co., MI; "Daniel Ball" age 67, b. VT, farmer, died April 1860.5,6 He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids, Eaton Co., MI.2
Comment by DGB: yDNA tests of descendants of Daniel Ball indicate that he was a direct descendant of John Ball and Elizabeth Pierce of Watertown and Lancaster MA. I have concluded that Daniel's father was most likely to have been Nathan Ball (son of Daniel Ball and Lucy Newton and who had a son Daniel baptized in 1798), but I have not seen anything to support this, yet. Others (includiing Dr. Druse) have suggested that Daniel's father could have been Zerubabbel Ball (1742-1829). Zerubabbel had several wives in sequence and there was a male under 10 living with him for the 1800 census at Herkimer NY that could fit Daniel (allowing that Zerubabbel could have been either father or grandfather at that point). Zerubabbel was at Stamford VT in 1790 and at Herkimer NY by 1800; Daniel was born c1791 in VT, so, again, there is still a possibility for a connection. Daniel was in NY by 1813, since he was granted bounty land for service in the War of 1812.
If one feels that the John B. Ball age 30-39 on the 1840 census at Grass Lake MI (as was Daniel age 47) could be a younger brother of Daniel, then Zerubabbel did not show a male living with him of that age on the 1810 census. That said, this John B. Ball could be a grandson of Zerubabbel and Daniel either his uncle or his cousin. Bottom line, all is just conjecture and circumstantial evidence so far; more data is needed. End of comment. Daniel Ball was a Private in Captian Nathaniel Fisher's Company of the New York Militia during the War of 1812. He was drafted at East Bloomfield on 15 September 1813 for the term of three months and under further General Orders he volunteered at Est Bloomfield on 1 January 1814 and served three months and 15 days and was honorably discharged from service.7
Comment by DGB: Some have included the Mary Etta Ball that married Henry J. Baker 8 June 1866 in Eaton Co. MI as a daughter of Daniel and Diantha Ball. I think this is unlikely, since she would have been under 10 for the 1850 census and was not included with Daniel and Diantha. The "Merritta", daughter of son William and wife Fanny would have been too young to have married in 1866. However, for the 1860 census there was a "Maryette Ball" age 12, b. MI, living in Eaton Falls, Eaton Co., MI, with Azariah and Mercy Willis that was likely the one to become the wife of Henry Baker. She was the only Ball living in Eaton Falls that census, but Daniel and Diantha's son Cephas and family were there in 1870, as were several other Ball families, so there could be some relationship back to Daniel and Diantha. End of comment.
