Dr. Laurence Remick Clapp was born on 14 October 1881 at Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA.1 He was the son of Austin Phelps Clapp and Mary Anna Remick.1 Dr. Laurence Remick Clapp married Helen Wadsworth Rhone on 23 March 1910 at New York, New York Co., NY.1 Dr. Laurence Remick Clapp died in 1928 at Nauru.1
Laurence Clapp went to the Boston Latin School where he graduated in 1899. He then went to Harvard University where he received his B.A. in 1903 (Phi Beta Kappa key 1902). He then went on to the Boston University School of Medicine and graduated in 1908. Laurence and Helen moved to Melbourne, Australia so that Laurence could pursue further studies in homeopathic medicine. Laurence, Helen, their sons Austin and Stuart, then went to the island of Nauru, he as the company doctor for the Pacific Phosphate Mining Company. Helen was his nurse. In 1922, Laurence helped control an outbreak of leprosy on Nauru by traveling to other areas which had the disease, observing the methods of treatment and, using a variety of treatments, limited the spread of the disease. By 1925 Laurence had set up a new and fully equipped hospital on Nauru. Dr. Clapp was looked upon with respect and devotion by the Chinese and Gilbertese laborers as well as the Europeans on Nauru and nearby islands. Laurence's untimely death in 1928 was a combination of diabetes and pulmonary tuberculosis.2
