     Virtue Johnson was born on 13 April 1793 at Wardsboro South District (now Dover), Windham Co., VT.¹ She was the daughter of Joab Johnson and Jemima Ball.¹ Virtue Johnson married Ephraim Rice, son of Daniel Rice and Sarah Ball, on 11 September 1814 at Dover (Somerset), Windham Co., VT.¹ Virtue Johnson died on 2 June 1854 at Dover, Windham Co., VT, at age 61.¹ She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, near West Dover, Windham Co., VT.¹

     He began military service on 28 April 1775 at VT. He served with Capt. Simeon Hazeltine, 5th Company, and Col. John Fellows, 8th Regiment, according to a Mass. muster roll of Aug 1, 1775. On August 14, 1777, while in Wilmington, he heard that the British army was marching toward Bennington. He hastened back home, shouldered his musket and started through the wilderness, across the Green Mountains to Bennington, where he arrived in time to particpate in the memorable battle at that place. He was also Town Clerk in 1800, 1802-1804 and 1813; also Treasurer in 1800 and 1802 in 1799 at Somerset, Windham Co., VT.¹

     Sarah Ball was born on 10 February 1764 at Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA.¹ She was the daughter of David Ball and Sarah Badcock.¹ Sarah Ball married Daniel Rice, son of Ephraim Rice, in June 1782 at Somerset, Windham Co., VT.¹ Sarah Ball died on 13 February 1838 at Dover, Windham Co., VT, at age 74.¹ She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, near West Dover, Windham Co., VT.¹

     He was in the military between 1943 and 1946 serving with the US Navy. He completed the V-12 college training program at University of South Carolina and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was commissioned Ensign in November 1945.
