At fourteen years old at Norwalk, Fairfield Co., CT, he learned the potter's trade with a local Methodist preacher by the name of Day.2 He established pottery works of his own and during the war of 1812 found plenty of employment in making dishes and cups at Saratoga Co., NY.2

John Budd Ball was born on 5 April 1823 at Gansevoort, Saratoga Co., NY.2 He was the son of Jacob Green Ball and Lucretia Hoyt.3 John Budd Ball married Sarah Bush circa 1848.4 John Budd Ball married Margaret Barrett Clarke, daughter of James Oscar Clarke and Rachel Barker Sands, on 11 October 1877 at Milton, Ulster Co., NY.1,2 John Budd Ball died on 3 October 1898 at Milton, Ulster Co., NY, at age 75.1,2 He was buried at Hicksite Friends Cemetery, Milton, Ulster Co., NY.1
He worked in the pottery owned by his father in 1836 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY.1 In 1845 he went to Milton, Ulster Co., NY, and commenced work as a journeyman in the Milton foundry, then owned and operated by Dr. Lee Ensign. In a few years he purchased a quarter-interest, and then a half-interest in the business, finally, in 1855, becoming sole proprietor of the foundry. From that time until 1869 Mr. Ball continued to successfully operate the foundry, giving it a wide reputation, and becoming recognized for many years as one of the leading manufacturers of the county.
