Zopher Ball1
M, #57059, b. circa 1724, d. 6 July 1803
Zopher Ball was born circa 1724; Comment by DGB: Zopher's birth year comes from his gravestone (and also shown on his veteran's burial card) and may or may not be accurate. His birth place is often recorded as Frederick Co. VA, but I haven't seen a credible source for that claim. Son William on the 1880 census lists his parents' birthplace as New Jersey and son Henry that year lists his parents' birthplace as Pennsylvania. While the Mason-Dixon Line was surveyed between 1763 and 1767, as of 1768 the part of Pennsylvania listed as Washington County for the 1790 census was claimed variously by Virginia, Pennsylvania and in some locales Maryland. The borders of Pennsylvania were not settled until the "Baltimore Agreement" of June 1780. Thus, a birth before 1780 could have taken place in what is now Pennsylvania, but at the time of the birth may have been viewed as having happened in several possible states. End of comment.1 He married Mercy (????) Zopher Ball married Susan (????)1 Zopher Ball died on 6 July 1803 at Washington Co., PA.1 He was buried at Ball Cemetery, Delaware, Mercer Co., PA.1
He fought as a sergeant in Capt. Thomas Gaddis's Company of the Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War. He also served as a private in Col. David Williamson's Frontier Rangers of the Washington County Militia in 1778-1783, and as an ensign in Capt. George Miar's Company of the Washington County Militia. Before the end of the war, he served as ensign of his own company of the Washington County Militia.1 Comment by DGB: yDNA tests of descendants of Zopher Ball indicate that he was a direct descendant of Edward Ball and Abigail Blatchley of Newark NJ, rather than to Col. William Ball of Virginia. My theory (totally without evidence) is that the regular occurance of the name "Caleb" in the descendants of Zopher strongly suggests that Zopher was a great-grandson of Edward Ball, a grandson of Edward's son, Caleb. Zopher's father could have been either of grandfather Caleb's sons.
On another issue, there is great concern about the attribution of all of the children listed for this Zopher Ball, given his age when supposedly still having children. It is pretty much certain that Susan was his second wife with her being mother to Isaiah and Dennis (based on a land sale by Isaiah and Dennis that included the grave of their mother, Susan Ball) and likely two or three more. The most common suggestion is that Zopher's first wife was named "Mercy" and I have shown that assumption here, but without source. End of comment. Isaiah Ball and Zopher Ball were surviving partners of Ezra Ball, desceased at Knowlton, Sussex Co., NJ, on 17 September 1764. Comment by DGB: The term "partners" would suggest that they were not all three brothers, but their common "Ball" surname implies a likely close kinship. End of comment.2 He was named in a deed record (from Deed Book 1C of Washington Co. PA) where Joseph Bozarth sold land adjoining "Zophar Ball" on the waters of Tenmile Creek in Washington Co. to James FitzPatrick on 27 December 1779.
