William Heath Cheney was born on 29 January 1840 at Groton, Grafton Co., NH.1 He was the son of Albert Gallatin Cheney and Hannah Heath.1 William Heath Cheney married Cordelia Maria Huckins, daughter of Deacon James Huckins and Louisa P. (????), on 14 February 1866.1 William Heath Cheney died on 6 February 1908 at Natrona Co., WY, at age 68.2,3 He was buried at Freeland Cemetery, Freeland, Natrona Co., WY.3
From an obituary in the "Natrona County Tribune", Casper WY: Died, at his home in Freeland, on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6, at 2:20, William H. Cheney, aged 68 years and 10 months. The sad news was not unexpected, for he has been a sufferer from cancer of the stomach for many months, and he and his many friends realized last summer that the end was not far off, and he would soon be called to join the silent majority. And thus it is, another is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers. William Heath Cheney was born at North Groton, N. H., on January 29, 1840; he came to Wyoming in April, 1889, and settled on a ranch in the Freeland country, where he has lived ever since; he was one of the many prosperous ranchers in that section. He is survived by one son, Mr. Albert G. Cheney, who is 41 years of age and is a resident of Freeland, and he comforted his father during his long sickness and was with him at the time of his death. Mrs. Cheney died on March 7, 1900. Mr. Cheney was a Blue lodge Mason, being raised to a Master Mason by Mount Prospect lodge, No. 69, at Ashland, N. H., on April 18, 1864. He dimitted from that lodge and was a charter member of Casper lodge No. 15, when it was organized in October, 1893. It was his special request that the Masonic services be conducted at his interment, and about twenty members from Casper were in attendance at the funeral, which occurred at the Freeland school house at 10:30 Tuesday morning, and the Masonic ritualistic services were conducted at the school house and at the grave.3

Lewis Howard Cheney1
M, #80705, b. 25 February 1843, d. 17 March 1911
Lewis Howard Cheney was born on 25 February 1843 at Groton, Grafton Co., NH.1 He was the son of Albert Gallatin Cheney and Hannah Heath.1 Lewis Howard Cheney married Mary Elizabeth West, daughter of John West and Nancy Purdue, on 17 May 1868 at Bloomington, McLean Co., IL.1 Lewis Howard Cheney married Alice B. (????) circa 1894.2 Lewis Howard Cheney died on 17 March 1911 at Monte Vista, Rio Grande Co., CO, at age 68.3
He enlisted at the outbreak of the Rebellion, in Co. D, 4th N. H. Volunteer Infantry: served as corporal of his company at the siege of Fort Wagner, at Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, the siege of Petersburg, Fort Fisher, and many other notable engagements. Was wounded at Deep Bottom. Narrowly escaped death in the explosion at Fort Fisher. Was Commissary Sergeant when mustered out at the close of the war. He removed to Illinois; afterward took up a Soldier's Homestead with a colony from Bloomington, Illinois and vicinity, at Monte Vista, in the San Luis valley, Colorado.1 From an obituary: Lewis H. Cheney was born in New Hampshire, February 25, 1843, and died at Monte Vista, Friday morning, March 17. At the breaking out of the Civil war, he enlisted, and was a member of Co. D, New Hampshire Volunteers and served four years and two months. Soon after the close of the war, he came west and settled in Illinois. Mr. Cheney came to Monte Vista in 1874 with T. C. Henry from Bloomington, Ill., when the work on the big canals was begun and hes resided here ever since. He assisted in laying out the town, and to his efforts largely, the prohibition of the sale of liquor was inserted in every deed in the conveyance of town lots. He has ever since taken a lively interest in the upbuilding of the town upon a high moral plane. He was a religious man but not creed-bound, and contributed liberally toward the erection of all the church edifices.
Mr. Cheney took a lively interest in all public matters; was a party man, but never sought office for himself. During the last six years he as a member of the Soldiers and Sailors Home Commission and worked faithfully for what he deemed best for the men who fought with him for the Union, and he lived to see the Monte Vista Home a public institution of which the town and state feel justly proud. Mr. Cheney was a member of the G.A.R. and Odd Fellows. The latter conducted the services at the grave. In the death of Mr. Cheney Monte Vista loses an esteemed and honored citizen who will be greatly missed. But his good deeds and cheerful words will not soon be forgotten. He leaves a widow, one son and a host of friends to mourn his loss.3
