In 1861 Washington Stivers moved to Portland, Lebanon Tws., Meigs County, Ohio, where he engaged in saw milling, grove and barrel making. In 1865 Morgan's cavalry raided the area and a cavalry battle took place on his premises. The invaders took his horses and plundered his property. Years later the lumber still yielded lead bullets. He started a little town of Gloversville where there was a small school house and a church with Sunday School, 'transforming the community for miles around'. In Pomeroy he was for years magistrate, postmaster, and Sunday School Superintendent. His house was supplied with good books on the church,
agriculture, scientific, business and hygienic literature. Family worship was regular. He distributed Bibles and was active in the cause of temperance, anti-slavery, and reforms.1
