George E. Smith1

George E. Smith was born on 22 November 1868 at Flushing, Genesee Co., MI.2 He was the son of Luther Cory Smith and Mary Frances Shute.1 George E. Smith married May L. Robinson on 18 July 1899 at Juneau Co., WI.3 George E. Smith died on 13 October 1942 at Seven Mile Creek, Juneau Co., WI, at age 73.1 He was buried on 16 October 1942 at Mauston Cemetery, Mauston, Juneau Co., WI.2
From a Mauston newspaper obituary: George E. Smith died at the home of his son Roy E. Smith in Seven Mile Creek, Tuesday night, Oct. 13, 1942, at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 18 days. George was born Nov. 22, 1868, in Michigan, the son of the late Luther and Mary Smith, and came to this community with his parents when a small child. His early life was spent here. On July 18, 1898, he was united in marriage to Mae L. Robinson, also of Mauston. To this happy union were born eight children, two dying in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Smith made their home during most of the years of their married life on their farm in the town of Lemonweir, coming to this city to live the past six years.
Throughout his life Mr. Smith was liked and respected by friends and neighbors. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, and will be missed, not only by the family, but by all who knew him. Mr. Smith, although in poor health for several years, was confined to his bed only the last eight days. He was a most patient sufferer, never complaining, and he remained cheerful to the last.
Those left to mourn his loss are his wife and six children, Roy E. Smith of Seven Mile Creek, Claude L. Smith of Lemonweir, and Iva (Mrs. P. J. Urtubees), Blanche (Mrs. Frank Leipold), Clarence and Jess Smith, all of Batavia, Ill. Also 20 Grandchildren, one great grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Harry Clawson of Groton, South Dakota, and two brothers, Charles of St. Paul, and John Smith of Minneapolis, besides many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. D. H. Fleet officiating. Burial was in the Mauston cemetery with full military honors, as Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. An escort of his former comrades in arms were present, and the large American flag which was placed on the casket of the deceased was folded and presented to his wife with due respect at the close of the service. All of the children and their families, besides many other relatives and friends were in attendance at the service.2
