Sarah Elizabeth Morehouse1
F, #41705, b. circa 1837, d. 1897
Sarah Elizabeth Morehouse was born circa 1837 at Livingston, Essex Co., NJ.1 She was the daughter of Moses Morehouse and Mary L. Bacorn.1 Sarah Elizabeth Morehouse married George Murray Ball, son of Archibald Ball and Sarah Gibbs Price, circa 1855 at Fifth Methodist Church, Newark, Essex Co., NJ.1 Sarah Elizabeth Morehouse died in 1897.1
So far as is known, little financial or emotional help was given her by her family after her husband died. 'Ma', as her children called her, worked as forelady in a corset factory. In spite of the poverty in which she lived, she raised a foster child, Janie, orphaned daughter of a friend, along with her own children. Janie later married the heir to a commercial fortune. Sarah's Civil War widow's pension was delayed by red tape and lost records while she searched for and finally located an army buddy of George's named Ed Price, who was able to certify to George's military service. When her back pension was finally paid in 1888, her long-delayed flurry or purchasing was viewed as a scandal by older brother James, who likened it to 'going up in a balloon.' Sarah gave each of her daughters a set of bedroom furniture. She married off all her girls, but they remained close to her and to each other all their lives, in affection and geography, as did their children and grandchildren. Sarah spent her last years with her youngest daughter's family In West Orange, N. J., probably in more comfort than she had ever known before. She was spoken of by her daughters as a stern, iron-willed woman. Perhaps she had to be. Her life was not easy, but she kept her family together.1 As of circa 1855,her married name was Ball.
