William Henry Ball1
M, #72192, b. 28 December 1817, d. 28 May 1904
William Henry Ball was born on 28 December 1817 at Franklin Co., OH.1 He was the son of Benjamin E. Ball and Rhoda A. (????)1 William Henry Ball married Aurella Lee, daughter of Josiah Lee and Priscilla Aldrich, on 17 January 1839 at Delaware Co., OH.1 William Henry Ball died on 28 May 1904 at Downs, McLean Co., IL, at age 86; hit by the east bound Big Four Passenger train on a railroad trestle.1 He was buried on 30 May 1904 at Hopewell Cemetery, Downs, McLean Co., IL.1
William Henry Ball enlisted in the Illinois Vol. Infantry, Company 'C', 33 Regiment 15 August 1861; he mustered in on August 22, 1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois. He was age 43, height 5' 8-1/2", black hair, gray eyes, dark complexion, married, and a carpenter by profession. His residence was Oldtown, McLean Co., Illinois, and his nativity was Franklin Co., Ohio. He was in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, campaign of 1863. He mustered out October 11, 1864 and was discharged December 5, 1864 at Springfield, Ill. He drew a pension for service until his death.1 From an obituary in "The Pantagraph" newspaper of Bloomington, Illinois: William Ball, an aged man who resided near Gillum, was struck and instantly killed on Saturday morning on a trestle between Gillum and Downs by the east-bound Big Four passenger train which left Bloomington at 9:10. Mr. Ball had started to cross the trestle over the track and had got only about two-thirds over when the train bore down on him. He probably became terror-stricken at the sight of the engine and before he had time to get into a safe position to allow the passage of the train the engine hit him and hurled him to the ground below, a distance of perhaps fifteen feet. Death resulted instantly for all signs of life were extinct when the train crew went to pick him up, which was done as soon as the train could be stopped. The point on the trestle where Mr. Ball was when hit by the engine is about twenty feet from the west end. The bridge is just east of a very sharp curve in the track, consequently, the engineer of the train could not see the man on the trestle until the engine was almost upon him. The engineer sounded the whistle vigorously as soon as the man was seen ahead. Mr. Ball, although somewhat deaf, evidently heard the alarm whistle, for, according to the story of the engineer and fireman, he made a desperate effort to get out on the end of the ties, but being slow of motion on account of age, and excited by his danger, he had taken only a partly prostrate position when the step on the tender struck him and knocked him from the track. He struck the rock ballast in the creek embankment, his fall probably adding to the extent of his injuries. Conductor Pangborn stopped the train and with the assistance of the trainmen, passengers and nearby farmers loaded the mutilated body of Mr. Ball into a wagon, when it was hauled to Downs. Conductor Pangborn said that in all his railroad expreience of twenty-five years, this was the first man ever killed by a train of which he had charge.
William Ball was a soldier of the civil war. He was born in Franklin county, Ohio, December 28, 1817. He enlisted in the Thirty-third regiment of Illinois volunteers in 1861 and was engaged in the siege of Vicksburg and was in many hard-fought battles. He was mustered out at the close of the war. He was married and the father of five children, three still living: C.L. Ball, Rebecca Bobp and Eunice. His son, Benjamin, was a soldier and lost his life while waiting for his discharge. He went into battle with his company and was killed. Another son, Oscar, was killed in the Custer massacre. Mr. Ball was very active for his age. He had been warned by friends not to walk the bridge. He was a man of very positive nature. His wife died in 1871. He will be buried beside her in Hopewell cemetery. He was a very strong Republican and a great admirer of President Roosevelt. Coroner Carson went to the scene of the accident and the verdict was that of accidental death.1
