Joseph D. Ball was born on 14 November 1843 at Chautauqua Co., NY.2 He was the son of James C. Ball and Julianna A. (????)1 Joseph D. Ball married Augusta Florence Smith, daughter of Thomas S. Smith and Julia A. Scott, on 25 December 1867 at Decorah, Winneshiek Co., IA.1 Joseph D. Ball died on 16 January 1923 at Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, at age 79.1 He was buried at Concord Cemetery, Concord, Dodge Co., MN.1
Joseph D. Ball enlisted 21 April 1861, responding to the call for three-month troops. He was assigned to Company A, McLean's Erie Regiment, and was stationed at Pittsburg during his first term. On the expieration of the three months he re-enlisted as a member of Company G, One Hundred and Fiftieth Pennsylvania Infantry, known as the Pennsylvania "Bucktails," or sharpshooters. This was in August 1862 and he was mustered into service at Harrisburg, Pa. The first engagement of the regiment was at Fredericksburg, which was followed by the battle of Chancellorsville and that most important battle of the war, Gettysburg. There mr. Ball was wounded by a shot entering his right arm. He recovered at a hospital in Philadelphia and was then placed on detached duty in Washington as an Orderly until he was honorably discharged on 29 June 1865.3 From an obituary: Ball, Joseph D., age 79 years, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at his residence, 3105 20th Ave. S. He is survived by his wife, one son, D. T. Ball, one daughter Mrs. E. L. Smith of West Concord, and one brother N. M. Cross of St. Charles, Minn. He was a veteran of the Civil war and a member of the G. A. R.1
