     Elijah Ball was born circa 1787 at New Shoreham, Block Island, Washington Co., RI.1,2 He was the son of Isaiah Ball and Margaret Dodge.1 Elijah Ball married Freelove Mitchell, daughter of Jonathan Mitchell.1 Elijah Ball died circa 1849 at Providence, Providence Co., RI.1
     He from his "Seaman's Protection Certificate": age 19, born New Shoreham, dark complexion, height 5 feet, and a scar on his right hand between the thumb and fore finger on 18 May 1807 at New London, New London Co., CT.2 Elijah Ball was tried for murder of his wife Freelove and convicted. On October 1, 1836 the "Norfolk Advertiser" reported that the Jury was out only ten minutes, though the "Columbia Register" says it was 20 minutes. The "Newport Mercury" reported that although Elijah Ball was sentenced to death, he petitioned for clemency and it was granted. The vote was 29 to 24 that he should be imprisoned for life, rather than executed.3

From an obituary from "The Richfield Springs Mercury": "Mrs. Phebe Coleman, widow of the late Alvin Coleman, died at the residence of her daughter-in-law in this village, Aug. 30, having attained the age of 80 years and ten months. Deceased was a daughter of Peter Ball, and belonged to one of the several families who emigrated from Block Island and helped to settle the township of Exeter in its Pioneer days. They were a sturdy, God-fearing race, and from them have descended some of our most prominent and respectable citizens. The deceased possessed strong traits of character, and was a worthy scion of the parent tree. Since the death of her husband she has resided with Mrs. Helen Coleman, of this village, where her declining years were made as pleasant and peaceful as possible."4
