     Freelove Mitchell was born circa 1793.¹ She was the daughter of Jonathan Mitchell.¹ Freelove Mitchell married Elijah Ball, son of Isaiah Ball and Margaret Dodge.¹ Freelove Mitchell died on 18 April 1836.¹ She was buried at North Burial Ground, Providence, Providence Co., RI. Her epitaph reads: To the Memory of Mrs. Freelove Ball, wife of Elijah Ball, & daughter of Jonathan Mitchell of Block Island. She died April 18, 1836, from stabs inflicted with a knife, in her 44th year. The Mother of nine children who all lived to deplore the loss of so excellent a Mother.

     Her married name was Ball. Elijah Ball was tried for murder of his wife Freelove and convicted. On October 1, 1836 the "Norfolk Advertiser" reported that the Jury was out only ten minutes, though the "Columbia Register" says it was 20 minutes. The "Newport Mercury" reported that although Elijah Ball was sentenced to death, he petitioned for clemency and it was granted. The vote was 29 to 24 that he should be imprisoned for life, rather than executed.²

     Henry W. Ball was born between 1821 and 1825 at RI. He was the son of Elijah Ball and Freelove Mitchell.¹ Henry W. Ball died on 1 June 1876 at Providence, Providence Co., RI.¹

     Gideon Ball was born circa 1811 at RI.² He was the son of Elijah Ball and Freelove Mitchell.¹ Gideon Ball married Mary Ann Ball, daughter of George Washington Ball and Abigail Dodge, on 16 January 1834 at New Shoreham, Block Island, Washington Co., RI.³ Gideon Ball died on 29 October 1859 at Providence, Providence Co., RI.¹
