Frank Putnam Ball was born on 2 April 1921 at Panama Canal Zone.1,2 He was the son of Clinton William Ball and Mary Elizabeth Field.1 Frank Putnam Ball died on 27 October 1978 at Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 57; SSDI lists last residence as Oxnard, Ventura Co., CA.1,2
Frank Putnam Ball was a graduate of West Point and in the USAF from 1 June 1943 to 1 Jun 1963, retiring as a Lt. Col.3 From and article in the "Pacific Stars and Stripes" 22 July 1957 (pp. 1-2): "Stand Under A-Shot, Call It 'Wonderful'" Indian Springs AFB, Nev. -- Five plucky air defense officers who stood unprotected directly beneath Friday's air-to-air atomic rocket explosion agreed that it was "a wonderful experience." The five officers stood without safety equipment and even without their hats on Yucca Flat while a Scorpion jet fighter launched the rocket more than 15,000 feet over their heads. They said the burst dazzled and jarred them but caused no physical damage.
Co. Sidney Bruce, of Durango, Colo., "Mayor of Ground Zero" and leader of the courageous quintet, described the explosion as "a very spectacular sight." He said his first sensation after the rocket fired was one of "heat - as one might expect from opening a furnace." With him in his small community were Lt. Col. Frank P. Ball, of Washington, D.C., Maj. Norman Bodinger, of Ridgefield, N.J., Maj. Donald A. Luttrell, of Dallas, Tex., and Maj. John F. Hughes of McKeesport, Pa. Maj. Hughes said the blast was "like a thousand flashbulbs going off around us." The five men watched the three jets streak in to launch the rocket, watched the weapon zomm toward the point in space where it exploded and then looked down just in time to protect their eyes from the blinding burst. They agreed on the basis of their experience that no one on the earth below need frear a high altitude detonation of the Genie rocket.
After the heat wave, Col. Bruce said, the "shock wave really came in there with a crash." He added: "My only regret is that we didn't have 1,000 people out there with us so that they could have the experience we had." The self-appointed guinea pigs said the radiation hazard at ground zero was "negligilble". They had monitoring equipment with them and said it showed they received no radiation at all. Hughes grinned: "We had front row seats, and it was wonderful."3
