Sylvester Ball1
M, #10718, b. 19 October 1784, d. 16 October 1825
Sylvester Ball was born on 19 October 1784 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.2 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Hannah (????)1 Sylvester Ball married Sally Muffin circa 1804 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.3 Sylvester Ball married Lydia Surdam circa 1813 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.3 Sylvester Ball died on 16 October 1825 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 40.1,4 He was buried at Mount Riga Cemetery, Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.4
Comment by DGB: Some have suggested that the Silas H. Ball that married Samantha I. Meade, daughter of Ephriam Meade and Jane Davenport and lived in Alpine, Kent Co., MI, was a son of Sylvester and Lydia and b. c1813 in CT. However, the censuses for 1850 through 1880 consistently show that Silas to have been born c1819 in New York state to parents born in New York state and that Samantha to have been born in NY, as was her father. There is a marriage record for a Silas Ball and Samantha Mead 1 January 1844 in the vital records of Seneca Co. OH. That Silas and Samantha were living with their 1 year old son in Alpine, Kent Co., MI for the census taken 17 August 1850 and her parents were living next door. Their young son, Allen, was born in MI. This certainly suggests that the Michigan family had been there for more than a year.
On the other hand, there is a listing on-line of "Mt. Riga Cemetery, Salisbury, CT As Published in Historical Collections of The Salisbury Association Inc., Vol. 1. 1913" that says Betsy Ball, daughter of Silas H. and Samantha I., died 25 July 1850, age 1 year 9 months (i.e., b. circa 25 October 1848) and was buried in Mt. Riga Cemetery. There was no suitable Ball family on the 1850 census in Salisbury taken a few weeks later. As well, I have not seen any source that has a Silas Ball born in CT to Sylvester and Lydia, so do not know how the original connection and c1813 birth date came about. Of course, Lydia Surdam, the proposed mother for Silas, was born in NY and Salisbury abuts on NY, so it is not impossible for her to have been in NY when Silas was born or for the later censuses to have shifted the birth date from c1813 to c1819. As for the burial of little Betsy Ball in Salisbury, it did not have to have happened in July 1850; her remains could have been shipped from MI. If, indeed, there is a Betsy Ball buried at Mt. Riga Cemetery as listed, then one would have to strongly consider that there is a linkage between the Silas and Samantha Ball of MI and the Salisbury Ball clan, but the census data for Sylvester and Lydia do not support another male. End of comment.

Peter Ball1
M, #10723, b. circa 1775, d. November 1849
Peter Ball was born circa 1775 at CT.1 He married Fanny (????)1 Peter Ball died in November 1849 at Lake Co., IN.1
Comment by DGB: I am not sure how this Peter has been tied by some people back to the Salisbury family, as there were numerous Ball families in CT c1775. Further, there were two Ball families in Lake Co. IN on the 1850 census and one was descended from Francis Ball of Springfield MA and the other from Edward Ball of Newark NJ. That said, I hypothesize that the Peter Ball who died in Lake Co., IN, was the same Peter Ball that was born in CT, married a Fanny (perhaps Fanny Green) born in CT, moved to Woodstock, VT, and had the children shown. For the 1850 census Peter shows up in the mortiality schedule for Lake Co. IN, Chester and family are living at Liberty, Union Co., IN, and Uriah is living at Washington, Randolph Co., IN, which is the only reason for connecting the Peter that died in Lake Co. IN with the family shown here. End of comment.
