Daniel Ball1

M, #10726, b. 25 July 1780, d. before 1840
Daniel Ball was born on 25 July 1780 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.2 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Hannah (????)1 Daniel Ball was baptized on 14 June 1784 at Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.3 He married Lydia Merritt, daughter of Cornbury Merritt and Mary (????), say 1807. Daniel Ball died before 1840; his widow is head of household for the census.4

Census, Occupation & Residence

August 1810Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT"Danl. Jnr." with a male 25-44 (Daniel 30), a female 16-25 (wife Lydia 21), a male under 10 (Horace 0), and a female under 10 (Aurelia 1)5
August 1820Alford, Berkshire Co., MA"Daniel" with a male 26-44 (Daniel 40), a female over 44 (probably an error for wife Lydia 31), a male over 44 (unknown), a male 10-14 (Horace 10), a male under 10 (John 6), a female 10-15 (Aurelia 11), and 3 females under 10 (Ann Jeanette 5, daughter 3, and Mary Ann 2)6
June 1830Lee, Berkshire Co., MA"Dan'l" with a male 40-49 (Daniel 49), a female 40-49 (wife Lydia 41), a male 30-39 (unknown), 2 males 15-19 (Horace 19 and John 17), a male 10-14 (unknown), a male 5-10 (Franklin 6), a male under 5 (Charles 0), a female 80-89 (possibly Daniel's mother Hannah 82 or Lydia's mother Mary 80), a female 15-19 (Ann Jeanette 15), 2 females 10-14 (Mary 12 and probably Harriet 8), and a female under 5 (Laurietta 5). Comment by DGB: The primary rationale for assuming that this is the correct family is that son Charles was born in Lee MA in Jan 1830, so having Daniel and his family still living there later that year is reasonable. As well, all of Daniel's known family are accounted for and the distribution closely matches the 1820 census allowing for the fact that the 1830 census was taken in June, rather than August. End of comment7

Erastus Ball1

M, #10727, b. circa 1767, d. circa October 1803
Erastus Ball was born circa 1767 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.1 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Hannah (????)1 Erastus Ball was baptized on 14 June 1784 at St. James Episcopal Church, Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.2 He married Sarah Seeley on 23 August 1787 at West Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., MA.3 Erastus Ball died circa October 1803 at Westford, Chittenden Co., VT; Comment by DGB: Administration of the estate of Erastus Ball, late of Westford VT, was granted 24 January 1804 to Peter Neels and the widow Sarah was visited 1 November 1803 following the death. This leaves the parentage of John T. Ball that was born April 1805 in question. End of comment.

Census, Occupation & Residence

August 1790Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT"Erastus" with 2 males over 16 (Erastus 23) and 2 females (wife Sarah and daughter Polly 2). The other male could either be a boarder or some other relative, such as an unknown brother, born 1773 or earlier4
August 1800Westford, Chittenden Co., VT"Erastus" with male 26-44 (Erastus 33), female 26-44 (wife Sarah), male 10-15 (unknown), 2 males under 10 (Erastus 9 and Milton 7), female 10-15 (Polly 12) and female under 10 (Anne 10). Since there were no males under 16 listed with Erastus in 1790, one can assume that the male 10-15 with him in 1800 is not a child of his, but a farm laborer. The rest of the family matches the known family for Erastus, assuming that son Ira was not born before 4 August 18005
