He was in the U.S. Navy from February 1943 to 1946. He went through training at Quonset Point, RI, then was stationed at Sand Point (Seattle), WA and Honolulu, HI. He was supposed to ship into the Pacific war campaign on the ill fated aircraft carrier 'USS Enterprise'. On discharge from the Navy as a Lt. Commander, he moved the family to Pendleton, Oregon to accept work at Pendleton Grain Growers between February 1942 and 1946.1 Floyd Root was one of the founders of the Oregon Wheat League and in president in 1952. Floyd was influential in the formation of the National Association of Wheat Growers, serving as president in 1960. In 1959 Floyd made a trip to India as President Eisenhower's representative to Geneva for developing an international wheat policy. From 1960 to 1962 Floyd Root was president of the Western Wheat Association, a marketing group for marketing US wheat internationally. The Governor of Oregon appointed him to the Oregon Wheat Commission from July 1961 to July 1970, where he also served a term as president. In 1962 Floyd was appointed by President Kennedy as an advisor on the Kennedy Rounds developing and International Grain Agreement.1
