Jesse Ball1
M, #23089, b. 17 May 1777, d. 25 October 1847
Jesse Ball was born on 17 May 1777. He was the son of Moses Ball and Vashti Oaks. Jesse Ball married Charity Carpenter, daughter of Allen Carpenter and Jemime (????), say 1804.1 Jesse Ball died on 25 October 1847 at Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT, at age 70.1,2 He was buried at North Ferrisburgh Cemetery, North Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT.3
Comment by DGB: The basis for connecting the three early Ferrisburgh VT Balls (Jesse, Alvin, and John who are assumed to be brothers), to Moses Ball is based upon an analysis of the 1790 census records for the six New England states reviewing every Ball family with at least 3 males in the 0-15 age group. In total there were 23 Ball families in 1790 fitting that profile. One key consideration is that a male direct descendant of Alvin Ball provided a yDNA sample that confirmed that the Ferrisburgh VT Ball brothers were connected to the line of John Ball and Elizabeth Pierce of Watertown MA.
The review of the 1790 census showed: Connecticut: one match that was a descendant of Alling Ball of New Haven, so genetically not a match to the Ferrisburgh VT Balls. Maine: the family of Samuel Ball living at Boothbay ME had 3 males in the correct age range, none of whom have been identified; however, that Samuel had a son John (1757-1823) that would make it quite unlikely for a second son to be named John while the first was still living. New Hampshire: three Ball families all descendants of Nathanial Ball of Concord MA, so genetically not a match. Massachusetts: 11 Ball families and ten have well known male children in that 0-15 age range that are not a match for the Ferrisburgh brothers. The remaining "Jona Ball" of Bedford MA is a bit of a mystery, but that is an unlikely seacoast location for families migrating to Vermont, so is not considered to be a likely candidate. Rhode Island: three Ball families all descendants of Edward Ball of Block Island RI, so genetically not a match. Vermont: four Ball families including Samuel Ball of Marlborough VT whose sons of that age are known, Jonathan Ball descended from the NJ Ball clan, so genetically not a match, Nathan Ball (whose children are known) and his brother Moses Ball (whose first child was known to be a Jesse of the right age to match the Ferrisburgh Jesse Ball) whose other children are unknown, so becomes the only viable candidate in the 1790 census in New England. Key here is that the yDNA of Moses Ball is known to be the same as two of the Ferrisburgh Balls (Alvin and John).
Are there other candidates? Possibly the 1790 census didn't catch everyone or the three Ferrisburgh Ball brothers could have been living that year with a family of a different surname. While the linking of Moses Ball as father to the Ferrisburgh VT brothers is not proven, it would appear likely that Moses and Vashti Ball are the only strong candidates. End of comment. He registered an ear mark on 22 September 1800 at Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT.4 Jesse Ball served as a volunteer in the unit from Vergennes VT on the Lake Champlain campaign during the War of 1812. From a land record dated 12 Jul 1852: "Know all men by these present that Charity Ball, John Ball, Esther Ball, Amanda Sheldon, and Austin Sheldon of Ferrisburgh in the County of Addison and David Ball, Daniel Ball, and Ephraim Ball of Charlotte in the County of Chittenden ..each receive $200 to the satisfaction of Jesse Ball of Ferrisburgh ..." This land record lists all the living children of Jesse and Charity and brought title to that land solely to Jesse Ball, Jr.5

John Ball1
M, #23096, b. circa 1812
John Ball was born circa 1812 at VT.2 He was the son of Jesse Ball and Charity Carpenter.1 John Ball married Charlotte Smith, daughter of Richard Smith and Jemima Hayden, on 1 January 1834 at Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT.1 John Ball was buried at Burnett Union Cemetery, Waupun, Dodge Co., WI.3,4
He received a deed from the federal government to land in Section 34, Chester, Dodge Co., WI, 1 March 1858. This land was subject of a number of legal notices in the "Dodge County Daily Citizen" in Beaver Dam and a foreclosure notice was published 13 September 1860.4 There was a John Ball, age 40, b. VT, iving at a boarding house where all residents were listed as having the occupation of "mariner" that, despite the 8 year error in age, is the only Vermonter of that name to have the potential to have been this John Ball. All of his children were acconted for (mostly in WI), which would support his having travelled to CA on his own.5 Comment by DGB: Since this John Ball has not been found in the 1880 census, he possibly died before then. The following newspaper article from the 17 January 1880 issue of the "Janesville Daily Gazette" of Janesville WI may or may not refer to this John Ball. End of comment.
Madison, Jan. 16 - In the criminal court today, Justice Bacon and Constable M. J. Ryan and E. D. Ryan, of Waukesha, charged with manslaughter, were discharged. It wll be remembered that John Ball, aged 70, was arrested for vagrancy by the constables and sentenced by Bacon to the county jail, although he had money in his pocket. The old man was in a dying condition at the time, but was driven fifteen miles in an open wagon to this city on a bitter cold day. He died within ten minutes after being put in jail. The case, wheich was on trial several days, caused much indignation. Judge Braley said there was no law to compel the accused to act the part of Good Samaritan, and no evidence to show willful corruption.6 Photo courtesy of Nancy Legerski of Bismarck ND.
