     He was in the military between 29 August 1862 and June 1863 in Company D, 16th Vermont Volunteer regiment; he served at Gettysburg.1 24 May 1871 William L. Barnes and Ellen Arvilla Rice adopted Nellie M. Hart and renamed her Nellie M. Barnes (married George F. Taft.)1 William L. Barnes was known to have married again on 7 November 1906.1
