Asel Franklin Ball was born on 21 September 1801 at Randolph, Orange Co., VT.2 He was the son of Adonijah Ball and Hannah Perry.2 Asel Franklin Ball married Rebecca Ellis, daughter of Jacob Ellis and Elizabeth Bird, on 24 February 1825 at Lewistown, Fulton Co., IL.2 Asel Franklin Ball married Elizabeth Wilson on 2 September 1838 at Perry Co., IL.3 Asel Franklin Ball died on 26 July 1856 at Rockwood, Randolph Co., IL, at age 54.1 He was buried at Ebenezer Memorial Cemetery, Rockwood, Randolph Co., IL.4
On December 10, 1830, Asel F. Ball was commissioned a First Lieutenant of the Fulton County Battalion. He served as Captain of one company of 46 men in the Mounted Volunteers under the command of Brigadier General Stillman during the Black Hawk War. He enrolled at Lewistown, Illinois, on April 28, 1832, and was mustered out of service at the same location on June 25, 1832. During one of the skirmishes with Chief Black Hawk and a party of 40 Sauk braves the American forces were routed about 18 miles above the junction of the Rock River with the Mississippi River. One of three companies of the Mounted Odd Battalion suffered the loss of seven men killed and three wounded whereas the Indians lost seven braves.
